The God Who Comes Down

Day 1 A Place for His Presence
Exodus 25:1-8
Read
Read the verse three times, slowly. The first time, listen for what God asks for. The second time, listen for why He asks. The third time, listen for the word that stays with you.

The Lord spoke to Moses: “Tell the Israelites to take an offering for me. You are to take my offering from everyone who is willing to give. This is the offering you are to receive from them: gold, silver, and bronze; blue, purple, and scarlet yarn; fine linen and goat hair; ram skins dyed red and fine leather; acacia wood; oil for the light; spices for the anointing oil and for the fragrant incense; and onyx along with other gemstones for mounting on the ephod and breastpiece. “They are to make a sanctuary for me so that I may dwell among them.
Reflect
God did not ask for a monument. He asked for a sanctuary — a place set apart so He could live among ordinary people in tents. Everything He asked them to bring was already in their hands: gold, cloth, wood, skill. He was not asking for what they did not have. He was asking for room. Where, honestly, is there no room for God in your life right now? Not because you rebelled — because you're busy.

Lord, I don't want to admire You from a distance. I want You near. Show me what I've filled with things that were never meant to hold Your place. I give You room. Come and dwell in me.
Rest
Sit in silence for a few moments and pray to the Lord:
What do you sense God is telling you to release in order to make room for him?

Day 2 I Will Not Go Without You
Exodus 33:14–15
Read
Read God's promise first. Then read Moses' answer. Notice that Moses answers a promise with a refusal.

The Lord replied, “I will personally go with you, Moses, and I will give you rest—everything will be fine for you.” Then Moses said, “If you don’t personally go with us, don’t make us leave this place.
Reflect
God offered rest, and the land, and an angel to go ahead of them. Moses said no. Not to the promise — to the substitute. He had learned something most of us learn late: the destination is not the blessing. The Presence is. A church can grow, a family can prosper, a life can look successful, and God can be politely absent from all of it. Moses would rather stay in a desert with God than enter a promise without Him.

Lord, forgive me for wanting Your hand more than Your face. If it comes down to it, I would rather have less and have You. Don't send me ahead of Yourself.
Rest
Rest for a few moments in His presence and hold this question in the quiet: What am I asking God to bless that I haven't asked Him to inhabit?

Day 3 When Glory Fills the House
Exodus 40:34–35
Read
Read the passage twice. The second time, pay attention to the order of events — what happens first, and what happens only after.

Then the cloud covered the Tabernacle, and the glory of the Lord filled the Tabernacle.
Moses could no longer enter the Tabernacle because the cloud had settled down over it, and the glory of the Lord filled the Tabernacle.
Reflect
The glory did not fall while they were building. It came when the work of obedience was finished. Chapters of measuring, weaving, and carrying — and then, without warning, the cloud. Notice too that the glory was so heavy Moses couldn't get in the room. There is a kind of Presence that ends our management of the service. Many of us have prayed for God to move and quietly hoped He'd stay within the run sheet.

Holy Spirit, I want more of You than I can control. Fill this house. Fill the rooms I can't see into. And where I've been waiting on a feeling to start obeying, forgive me — I'll finish the work in front of me.

Spend a few moments in His presence. In the silence, let one word rise: filled.

Day 4 He Walks Among Us
Leviticus 26:11–12
Read
Read it aloud. Hear it as a promise spoken directly to you, not about someone else.

I will live among you, and I will not despise you. I will walk among you; I will be your God, and you will be my people.
Reflect
He does not say I will visit. He says I will walk among you. Walking is unhurried and ordinary. It's what you do with someone you're not in a rush to leave. We tend to locate God in the sanctuary on Sunday and lose Him somewhere on the drive home Monday. But this promise is about the middle of the week — the shop floor, the classroom, the hospital waiting room, the kitchen at 6 a.m. He is not embarrassed by your ordinary.

Lord, walk with me into the parts of my week I wouldn't invite anyone into. Be God in my ordinary. Let me stop performing for You and start walking with You.

Take a few moments in His presence: In the silence, picture the most ordinary place you'll be today. Sit quietly and let Him stand in it.

Day 5 The Cloud and the Cost
1 Kings 8:10–13

Read slowly. Notice what the priests were doing when the cloud came, and what they could no longer do afterward.

When the priests came out of the Holy Place, a thick cloud filled the Temple of the Lord. The priests could not continue their service because of the cloud, for the glorious presence of the Lord filled the Temple of the Lord. Then Solomon prayed, “O Lord, you have said that you would live in a thick cloud of darkness. Now I have built a glorious Temple for you, a place where you can live forever!”
Reflect
Solomon spent seven years and a fortune preparing a house. When glory came, the priests had to stop ministering — the Presence interrupted the professionals. There's a warning here for those of us who serve: it is possible to run the house of God so well that we never actually meet Him in it. And there's an invitation: real preparation always costs something. Fasting, forgiveness, a returned phone call, an apology you've been avoiding.

Lord, search me. Show me what I've been managing instead of surrendering. I'll pay what it costs to be a house You want to fill.

Spend a few moments in His Presence: Ask one question in the silence and wait: What do You want cleared out? Write down whatever comes.

Day 6 One Thing I Desire
Psalm 27:4
Read
Read the verse. Then read only the first six words, several times.
Psalm 27:4
The one thing I ask of the Lord— the thing I seek most— is to live in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, delighting in the Lord’s perfections and meditating in his Temple.
Reflect
David had many desires — he was a king, a father, a soldier, a man with enemies. Out of all of them he names one. Not one thing among many; one thing above all. Most of us pray a long list because our hearts are genuinely divided, and there is no shame in that. But there is a mercy in being simplified. Ask yourself plainly: if God answered only one of my prayers this year, which one would I choose? Your honest answer is your treasure.

Lord, my heart is crowded. Simplify me. Make Your nearness the one thing I cannot live without, and let the rest fall into its place behind it.

Sit a few moments in His presence, pray no requests, just enjoy Him. Only: One thing I desire — You.

Day 7 Better Is One Day
Psalm 84:1–4, 10
Read
Read the whole passage, then linger on verse 10. Let the comparison land.

How lovely is your dwelling place, O Lord of Heaven’s Armies. I long, yes, I faint with longing to enter the courts of the Lord. With my whole being, body and soul, I will shout joyfully to the living God. Even the sparrow finds a home, and the swallow builds her nest and raises her young at a place near your altar, O Lord of Heaven’s Armies, my King and my God! What joy for those who can live in your house, always singing your praises.
A single day in your courts is better than a thousand anywhere else! I would rather be a gatekeeper in the house of my God than live the good life in the homes of the wicked.
Reflect
The psalmist envies a sparrow. The bird gets to live near the altar year-round, while he has to travel to get there. He is not describing duty; he is describing homesickness. Somewhere along the way many believers stopped missing the house of God. Attendance became a habit, then a preference, then an option. This psalm doesn't scold that — it reawakens it. Today is a good day to pray for someone who used to sit near you and doesn't anymore.

Lord, give me back my hunger for Your house. And bring home the ones who have drifted — the ones I miss, and the ones who think nobody noticed they were gone.

In the silence, see a face. Hold it before God without words.
